What happened
Military robots are not new, but humanoid form factors change where a machine can go and which tools it can use. A robot designed around human buildings, vehicles and weapons can enter environments built for people without requiring the environment to be redesigned.
The current programs emphasize reconnaissance, logistics and dangerous tasks rather than independent lethal action. Still, the same progress in perception, balance and manipulation celebrated at civilian demonstrations has obvious defense applications.
The immediate governance question is not whether a metal soldier has awakened. It is how quickly human authorization, targeting and accountability rules will keep pace with increasingly capable bodies.
