The robots got their own Olympics.

At Beijing’s 2026 World Humanoid Robot Games, more than 2,000 machines ran, boxed, played soccer—and occasionally ended a sprint in a shower of sparks.

Executive summary

Robots broke machine records in running and jumping at the second World Humanoid Robot Games. The crash footage showed what still needed work: stopping, recovering and surviving contact with the scenery.

What happened

More than 2,000 humanoid robots competed in Beijing across athletics, soccer, boxing and practical scenarios such as hotel service and emergency response. The final 100-meter robot-Games record fell to 8.64 seconds, a dramatic improvement over the inaugural competition.

The unforgettable footage came after the finish line. Several runners plowed into padded barriers; one training clip shows a machine folding backward at the waist as sparks and smoke burst from its body. Other race footage shows robots falling, breaking apart or briefly catching fire.

What this does—and doesn’t—show

These are robot-event results, not official human world records. The courses, machines and competition rules differ, many systems were teleoperated or supervised, and spectacular failures can obscure the slower but more commercially relevant progress in manipulation and service tasks.
